NYS Court Officer requirements
Six minimum qualifications — and the thing almost nobody realises: there is no age restriction to take the exam. The requirements apply at hiring, not at testing.
Is there an age limit? Yes — but not for the test
The court system's FAQ answers this in one sentence: there is no age restriction to take the examination, but a candidate must be at least 20.5 years old at the time of appointment to the position.
That distinction is worth understanding, because it changes what you should do. Given results land around spring 2027 and candidates are then canvassed in rank order over several years, someone who is 19 today can reasonably sit this exam and be old enough long before their name comes up.
On a maximum age: the announcement and the FAQ state the 20.5 minimum and do not state an upper limit. We are not going to infer one from that silence — if it matters to your situation, confirm it with the court system rather than with a prep site.
The six minimum qualifications
All of these must be met by the time of hiring, not to sit the exam.

High school diploma or equivalent
An equivalency diploma with test scores counts.
Valid New York State driver's license
Also required specifically for academy appointment.
Legally eligible to purchase and carry firearms
Court Officers are peace officers who are required to carry a firearm.
The FAQ also still lists COVID-19 vaccination, with its own note that the mandate was lifted on February 17, 2023. It is not a current requirement; we mention it only because you will see it on the official page.

There is exactly one route, and it starts with an exam score.

Emailed about six months after the testing window — expect spring 2027.

As vacancies open. Your rank decides how long you wait.

Pass pre-appointment screening
Physical, medical, psychological, substance-abuse screening and a background investigation.
Step 6
Meet every requirement, then the academy
All minimum qualifications must be met by the time of hiring. Then four months of paid training.
What you bring to screening
Originals and copies. The driving abstracts catch people out — they are required from every state you have ever held a licence in.
- Birth certificate or valid US passport

- High school diploma (and equivalency test scores, if applicable)

- Driver's licence and vehicle registration
- Lifetime driving abstracts from every state you have been licensed in
