What the 911 operator test looks like

New York City Police Department / DCAS · Exam No. 6329 · facts last checked August 15, 2026

Seven ability areas, and the interesting thing about them is what is missing. They are the Police Officer set minus spatial orientation and visualization — the two constructs that belong to someone moving through a place rather than listening to one described.

That is the clearest signal in the notice about what this job actually is.

The mechanics the notice publishes

The multiple-choice test is conducted at a computer terminal. The notice states that testing for Exam 6329 is expected to begin on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, following a filing period that ran 7 May to 17 July 2026.

Your score determines your place on the eligible list, and appointments are made from that list under Civil Service Law § 61 — one of the three highest-ranked candidates willing to accept. Passing is the threshold; the score above it decides when you are reached.

The seven, with the notice's own examples

Deductive reasoning is illustrated by determining what unit to dispatch when a caller reports hearing strange sounds from the apartment next door. Inductive reasoning by interpreting departmental guidelines when inputting data into the response system. Information ordering by following protocol when reporting information about a call.

Memorization is illustrated by recalling the location of a robbery. Problem sensitivity by determining the critical nature of a call when the caller is having difficulty describing the emergency. Written comprehension by interpreting departmental operations and regulations and carrying out procedures. Written expression by recording pertinent information received.

Read together they describe the console job precisely: take in what someone tells you under pressure, decide what it means against written rules, and record it so a unit can act.

What is absent, and why it matters

Spatial orientation and visualization appear on the Police Officer, School Safety Agent and Correction Officer notices and not on this one. That is not an oversight — it is the difference between a role that navigates a place and one that works from a description of it.

For a candidate preparing for more than one title it means the overlap runs one way. Everything you prepare for this exam transfers to Police Officer; the reverse leaves two constructs you did not need.

Devices, and what happens if you bring one

Calculators are not permitted, and neither is any other electronic device. Items brought to the site are sealed in a Yondr pouch until after the exam event, headphones and earbuds included.

Using a prohibited device at any location during the event — the testing area, a restroom, a hallway — nullifies your score, bars you from civil-service tests for up to five years, and forfeits your application fee.

What is not published

Question count, running time, section boundaries and per-ability weighting do not appear in the notice, and neither does any past form of the paper.

Where our practice papers use a length or a structure, it is documented as ours. The point is to make pacing rehearsable, not to imply knowledge nobody outside DCAS has.

Questions candidates ask

How many questions are on the 911 operator exam?

The notice does not publish a question count. It states that the test is multiple choice and conducted at a computer terminal.

What abilities does the 911 operator exam test?

Seven: deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, information ordering, memorization, problem sensitivity, written comprehension and written expression. Each is defined in the notice with a job-specific worked example.

Why is there no spatial orientation on this exam?

Because the job does not navigate. Spatial orientation and visualization appear on the patrol titles' notices and not on this one, which is the clearest indication in the document of what the role actually involves.

Can you use a calculator?

No, and no other electronic device either. Items are sealed in a Yondr pouch for the exam event, and using one nullifies your score and bars you from civil-service tests for up to five years.

Is preparation transferable to the Police Officer exam?

In one direction. All seven abilities here also appear on the Police Officer notice, which tests those plus spatial orientation and visualization.

Is there a typing test?

The notice does not describe one as part of the multiple-choice examination. It does state that the work involves typing information into the computer using a keyboard.
