Most civil-service exams run once every few years, and missing the filing period costs a hiring cycle. This one does not work that way, and the difference changes how you should plan.
A single Notice of Examination covers twelve exam numbers — 7311 through 7322 — with an overall application window from 1 July 2026 to 14 June 2027. Inside it each number has its own two-week filing period and its own testing week.
The schedule as the notice prints it
Exam 7311 filed 1–14 July 2026 and tested 3–8 August. Exam 7312 filed 3–17 August and tests 1–4 September. Exam 7313 files 1–14 September and tests 5–9 October. Exam 7314 files 1–14 October and tests 2–7 November. Exam 7315 files 2–16 November and tests 1–5 December.
Exam 7316 files 1–14 December 2026 and tests 4–9 January 2027. Then 7317 files 4–19 January and tests 1–6 February; 7318 files 1–16 February and tests 1–6 March; 7319 files 1–15 March and tests 5–10 April; 7320 files 1–14 April and tests 3–8 May; 7321 files 3–17 May and tests 1–5 June; and 7322 files 1–14 June 2027 and tests 5–9 July.
The application fee is $0.00 for every one of them. The notice instructs applicants to select "No Fee" as the payment method.
What a missed window costs
Four weeks. That is the entire penalty for not filing this month, and it is the single most useful fact on this page. A candidate who is not ready in September can file in October against the same notice, the same requirements and the same nine abilities.
Compare that with the other exams covered here. School Safety Agent and Traffic Enforcement Agent run roughly quarterly, so a missed window costs a season. The New York State Court Officer exam opened for filing in April and May 2026 and will not open again for years.
Why that argues for preparing first and filing second
On an exam that runs once, filing immediately is obviously right — you cannot prepare your way into a window that has closed. On this one the calculation reverses. Your score sets your list number, the list number decides when you are reached, and there is another number along in four weeks.
That is not an argument for indefinite delay. Lists established earlier are worked earlier, and the age ceiling is measured from the first date of the application period, so waiting has a real cost for anyone near 35. It is an argument for filing for the number you can actually be ready for.
What the dates do not tell you
The notice gives testing periods rather than individual appointments. Candidates are scheduled within the stated week, and the notice does not publish how that scheduling is allocated.
Nor does it state when an eligible list from a given exam number will be established. The list duration is the usual four-year ceiling under New York Civil Service Law section 56, but the establishment date is not something the notice fixes in advance.
