Special Officer 6327 vs Special Officer (NYC H+H) 6328

Notice 6327 states that certain assignments require the carrying of firearms, and that appointees to those assignments must qualify and remain qualified for firearms usage and possession. It also requires a New York State motor vehicle driver licence by the time of appointment for positions in certain agencies, maintained for the duration of employment.

Notice 6328 contains neither requirement. There is no firearms clause and no driver licence clause anywhere in the document.

For a candidate who does not drive, or who is certain they do not want to carry a firearm, that is not a nuance — it is the answer. On 6327 the firearms condition attaches to an assignment the candidate does not choose; on 6328 the question does not arise from the notice at all.

Both notices state a current minimum of $39,206 per annum. From there they part company. 6327 adds only that the rate is subject to change, publishing no maximum and no supplement.

6328 publishes annual automatic increases to a current maximum of $56,508 after five years of service, and adds $5,000 a year for officers trained to operate the Weapons Detection Scanning Systems.

A trained officer on the minimum is therefore on $44,206 under 6328 against $39,206 under 6327, for the same start date and the same examined abilities. That does not prove the H+H job pays more in every case — a bargained term not printed in a notice still exists — but it does mean one of these documents tells you where the money goes and the other does not.

6327 requires a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and nothing above it. That is already the lowest bar among the DCAS titles covered here.

6328 goes lower. It accepts the same diploma, or an Individualized Education Program (IEP) diploma together with six months of full-time work experience. It also publishes the formula for converting part-time hours: (hours per week ÷ 35) × months worked.

The filing windows differed too. 6327 ran 4 to 26 February 2026. 6328 was amended on 25 February to extend its window from 26 February to 13 March, with candidates who had already applied told they need not apply again.

Two certifications rather than one. Both titles require New York State peace officer training with mandatory annual recertification. 6328 adds CPR/BLS certification and Basic First Aid certification, obtained through the NYC Health + Hospitals Special Officer Training Academy to New York State Department of Health and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services standards, and maintained for the duration of employment.

A duty the other notice does not name: operating and monitoring the Weapons Detection System to identify weapons and prohibited items. That is the entrance-screening role, and the $5,000 supplement attaches to being trained for it.

And a working environment that changes the judgement calls rather than the rules. The people an H+H officer deals with are patients and the people waiting for them. Two of the six ability examples in the notice involve someone who is unwell, which is a fair signal of what the questions are dressed in.

6327 places successful candidates on a DCAS eligible list and states that such a list is usually active for four years. 6328 places them on an NYC Health + Hospitals eligible list and does not state a duration at all.

We do not fill that gap by borrowing the sibling's figure. New York Civil Service Law § 56 bounds eligible lists generally at not less than one year and not more than four, and that statutory range is what a 6328 candidate should plan against.

Passing one exam does nothing for the other. They are separate lists, so a candidate who wants both chances has to sit both papers — which, given that the abilities are identical, costs a second $54 fee and a second test day rather than a second course of preparation.
