After the School Safety Agent exam: the steps between passing and starting

If you pass, your name is placed on an eligible list in final score order and you receive a list number, with results notified by email. The minimum passing score is 70%, and passing is only the threshold for getting a number at all — the score above 70 sets your place in line.

The notice says such a list is usually active for four years. New York Civil Service Law section 56 sets that range at not less than one and not more than four years, so four is a ceiling rather than a promise.

This notice carries no New York City Residency Credit. Living in the city is a condition of Special Patrolman status and therefore of appointment, but it adds no points to your score — a distinction that catches candidates who have read about the Police Officer exam, where a ten-point residency credit does exist.

Appointments are made under New York Civil Service Law section 61, which permits the appointing authority to select one of the three highest-ranked candidates on the certified list who will accept the position. The list is therefore worked from the top down.

Because DCAS runs the exam and the list while the NYPD employs the agents, two organisations are involved after you pass: DCAS scores and certifies, and the Police Department runs the screening and the hiring. Agents are then posted into Department of Education buildings, which is why the job description is framed by DOE rules while the background check is the NYPD's.

All candidates undergo a background check conducted by the New York City Police Department to verify the Special Patrolman qualifications, including character, and the notice states that this check commences prior to appointment.

This is where the conviction provisions in the notice become concrete. A felony or a serious offense enumerated in Penal Law section 265.00(17) bars appointment, while a Certificate of Good Conduct or, for a misdemeanor or a violation, a Certificate of Relief from Disabilities may make an applicant eligible. A candidate in that position is better served getting the certificate in hand before the check reaches the conviction than explaining it afterwards.

Physical standards are established for the title and candidates must pass a qualifying physical test. Medical and psychological guidelines apply as well, examined against your ability to perform the essential functions of the job, with reasonable accommodation provided where appropriate.

The notice adds something most do not: you are expected to keep performing those functions throughout your career, and may be medically and psychologically tested periodically for that reason. So this screening is a recurring condition of the job rather than a single hiring gate. A drug screening must also be passed before appointment.

The probationary period is one year from appointment.

If you believe your test was rated incorrectly you can appeal to the DCAS Committee on Manifest Errors through the Online Application System, stating the reasons a higher score is warranted. The notice is explicit that the re-rating may come back different in either direction, so an appeal is a genuine re-examination of your paper rather than a request that can only help.
