NYC School Safety Agent salary: the figures and what they assume

The notice states a current minimum salary of $40,480 per year, and says incumbents receive salary increments reaching $58,345 per year at the completion of five years of employment as a School Safety Agent. The increments themselves are not itemised in the notice, so the honest reading is: the endpoints are stated and the shape of the climb between them is not.

The five years are specified as employment as a School Safety Agent. That wording matters for anyone transferring from another city title — the clock the notice describes runs on service in this title, not on city service generally.

The notice states that School Safety Agents may be required to work various shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. A school building is not only occupied during class hours, and the schedule reflects that.

The physical conditions the notice names are unusually candid for a salary discussion, and they belong in one: working through ongoing school construction including asbestos-removal projects, working in non-air-conditioned areas during summer months, navigating unlit stairwells, walking a school perimeter in all weather, responding to altercations between students and attempting to separate them, functioning under stressful conditions in potentially hostile environments, and lifting and moving cumbersome equipment.

School Safety Agent starts lowest of the three DCAS uniformed titles with an open filing window, and it also has the lowest entry bar. Traffic Enforcement Agent starts at $48,719 but requires a New York State driver licence by 15 months in the job. Police Officer starts at $55,942 and reaches $109,352 at five and a half years, but requires 24 college semester credits or two years of honorable full-time military service.

So the comparison a candidate should actually run is not salary against salary. It is salary against what each title asks of you to get in: School Safety Agent asks for a high school diploma and nothing further on the education side, which is the lowest bar of the three.

The application fee for Exam No. 7323 is $61.00. Beyond that, the notice describes screening you must pass rather than pay for: a qualifying physical test, a drug screening, and medical and psychological examination against established guidelines.

One ongoing condition is worth costing out before you apply. New York City residency is required at appointment and through your first two years of continuous employment. After two years the notice permits residence in Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Orange, Rockland or Putnam county. For a candidate currently living outside those areas, the first two years carry a housing constraint the salary figure does not mention.
