What a NYC Traffic Enforcement Agent actually does

Assignment Level I covers patrolling an assigned area and issuing paper and electronic summonses for movement, parking, stopping and standing violations. Level II adds directing and controlling traffic at assigned locations — standing in an intersection and moving vehicles by hand, rather than only documenting stationary ones.

Candidates from this list are appointed at Assignment Level II. You do not spend a period at Level I first. That is worth knowing when you picture the job: directing traffic is part of the work from the start, not something earned later.

Two further levels sit above, each carrying higher salary steps under the union contract. Level III is the one that requires a W tow-truck endorsement on your licence, with no restrictions.

Assignment Level IV requires Special Patrolman status granted by the New York City Police Commissioner, under Administrative Code section 14-106 and chapter 13 of title 38 of the Rules of the City of New York.

That status is what separates this level from the ones below it in kind rather than degree. Below it, the work is enforcement of traffic and parking regulation. It is not conferred by passing the exam and it is not automatic with time served — it is granted, by the Commissioner, and the notice presents it as a condition of the level rather than a benefit of the title.

You do not need a driver licence to apply, and you do not need one to sit the test. You must hold a valid New York State motor vehicle driver license by the time you reach 15 months in the position, and keep it for the rest of your employment.

The screening around it is real: moving violations, a licence suspension or an accident record may be disqualifying. If your driving record is the weak point in your application, the fifteen-month clock is the window you have to work with, and it starts at appointment rather than at the exam.

The working week is 40 hours. Shifts rotate and include Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, and the notice states that overtime is part of the position.

Traffic enforcement follows traffic, which does not observe a Monday-to-Friday pattern, and the rotation reflects that. Candidates weighing this title against others should price the rotating schedule honestly rather than treat it as a detail — it is one of the larger practical differences between this job and a fixed-post title.

Medical and psychological guidelines are established for the title, and you are examined against them, with reasonable accommodation provided where appropriate. A drug screening must be passed for appointment. Assignment Level III carries an additional medical screening and an additional drug screening on top.

The probationary period is 12 months. You must be able to understand and be understood in English, and under the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 you must prove identity and right to work in the United States before employment begins.
